Someday, We Knew Each Other

Some people will remain in our lives. Others will pass through them.
But leaving will not make our encounter meaningless. A relationship will not have to last forever to become part of who we are. Sometimes, knowing someone for only a short while will be enough to change the direction of a life—quietly, almost invisibly.
One day, we will let each other go. And because we knew each other, we will both continue on a little differently.
Perhaps you will have taught me to look at the world with more patience. Perhaps I will have given you the courage to say something you had kept inside for too long. We may have shared years, months, or only a handful of conversations. It will not really matter. Something will have moved between us. Something will stay.
We often think that people either remain or disappear, but human connection is rarely that simple. We will carry traces of one another. A familiar expression will slip into our vocabulary. A song will bring back an entire afternoon. We will choose differently because someone once showed us another possibility. Even after our lives have moved apart, they will continue to hold small pieces of the time when they touched.
Not every connection is meant to be permanent. Some people arrive to awaken something, to soften something, or to help us recognize a part of ourselves we could not yet see. Their departure will not undo their importance. An ending will not erase what happened before it.
Maybe we will no longer know the details of each other’s days. Maybe our lives will unfold in places the other will never see. Still, somewhere within the people we will become, the memory of our meeting will remain—not as a wound or a promise, but as a quiet influence.
You will go your way, and I will go mine.
But neither of us will leave exactly as we came.
Because we knew each other, we will both continue on a little differently. And perhaps that will be one of the most beautiful things we could ever have given one another.
