The Book I Will Never Finish Reading

Sometimes it finds me.
Not as sorrow, but as a quiet longing.
The realization that there are answers I will never know. That somewhere, hidden within the fabric of reality, lie explanations to questions humanity has whispered for centuries. Why is there something rather than nothing? What is time? What is the universe truly made of? And why does wonder sometimes feel like longing for a place we've never been?
I imagine all human knowledge as one endless book.
A book with no true beginning and no final page.
Long before us, philosophers, artists, scientists, and dreamers filled its pages. They wrote down ideas, questioned certainty, made mistakes, started over, and occasionally uncovered truths that changed everything. Some wrote entire chapters. Others only a single sentence.
And then they passed the book on.
There is something profoundly beautiful about that.
Because no one ever reads it all.
Not Newton.
Not Einstein.
Not the greatest minds alive today.
Each of us is allowed only a few chapters. Some add a page. Most leave behind a paragraph. Yet every contribution becomes part of the story.
For a long time, that thought saddened me.
I wanted to understand—not just a little, but completely. I imagined that somewhere beyond the next page lay the answer that would finally connect every loose thread into one perfect tapestry.
Instead, every page I turned revealed countless more still waiting.
And perhaps that is where the beauty truly lives.
Because what if we ever reached the final page?
Would wonder survive the last answer?
Perhaps curiosity is the most romantic form of longing.
A longing for something that forever remains just beyond our reach.
Like the light of distant stars that began its journey long before we were here.
Like the horizon that retreats with every step we take.
Like a melody that never fully resolves.
Maybe knowledge was never meant to be a destination.
Maybe it is simply a journey through an infinite library, where every door opened reveals another corridor of books still waiting to be discovered.
Perhaps all we are ever asked to do is to walk slowly.
To remain curious.
To add a single sentence to the book before passing it gently into someone else's hands.
Not because our names need to be remembered.
But because someone, somewhere, will read those words, pause for a moment, smile, ask a new question...
...and turn the page.
Perhaps that is all any of us can truly leave behind.
Not answers.
But wonder.
